Where DNA records are kept is not a technical decision, it is a governance decision.

AI hyperscalers are increasingly coming for the genetic data of all flora and fauna, as these may be the last high-purity data sets available for the training of their gargantuan AI models (See our position paper “Purity and Mastodons”).

Custody promises by hyperscalers are contractual. Contracts bend under financial pressure, regulatory change, mergers, acquisitions, liquidations.

The Neon Forest custody commitment is structural — data held by Indigenous stewards, under collective supervision.

First, Neon Forest is about sovereign infrastructure for hosting and compute ; its longer horizon will likely involve genomic data services at scale, where the custody question is most consequential.
